MGMT

Our creative relationship with MGMT dates back to 2018. When they reached out about their upcoming performance of their timeless album, “Oracular Spectacular,” we were excited to discuss their plans. They didn’t just want to play the album, they wanted to reimagine and perform it in an entirely fresh way; through the lens of a high school play.

AllofUs was proud to lead the show direction, production design, and lighting design on this eccentric project. This show had a ton of moving parts, from moving video elements, the stage being constructed and deconstructed during the set, dancers, a children's choir, props coming on and off, a festival turntable, and all sorts of beautiful chaos. The show direction required a thoughtful and detailed approach which allowed all of these different elements to interact harmoniously and successfully.

We knew the production design had to be versatile and modular. The main feature of the production design was a mobile semi-transparent video wall that was divided into two individual pieces. These two video elements could be moved side to side, revealing a cube truss structure behind them which doubled as a B-stage and a riser for guest musicians to perform on top of and inside of.

Working with MGMT is always a pleasure. This project was a massive undertaking which made the end result feel especially rewarding. This show was a huge success and we can’t wait to see what they do next.
